Korean skin tech comes to Chiswick

Sunday is forecast to hit 33°C, so this week's edition leans heavily towards being outside, and towards not overdoing it.
There's a new pizzeria on Devonshire Road, a permanent home for the Post Office at last, and three of the smallest gardens in W4 have come back with awards. Plus the final weekend of outdoor cinema at Gunnersbury, flamenco at the George IV, and Chiswick's other Sunday market.

🥖 The Food Market at Dukes Meadows

Chiswick's other market, and the one people sometimes forget about because it isn't on the High Road.
It runs every Sunday in the farmyard setting at Grove Park Farm House, next to the play area, with producers turning up rain or shine. It's a social enterprise, and what it makes goes back into maintaining the park.
Worth knowing for anyone who has never made the trip: it's five minutes' walk from Chiswick or Barnes Bridge stations, the E3 and 190 stop nearby on the A316, and by car it's behind the flats opposite Chiswick School.
With Sunday forecast at 33°C, it's a riverside walk, a coffee and something from a stall before the day gets too hot. The play area next door does the rest.

🎪 Community Fun Day at Hogarth Youth & Community Centre
Friday 7 August, 12.30pm to 6pm · Duke Road, W4 2JR
A free afternoon for all ages, with a bouncy castle, music and arts and crafts. No booking, just turn up. Children under 8 need an adult with them, and activities are subject to change. Free entry.
🌈 The Wonderful Wizard of Oz at Osterley Park
Saturday 8 August, 2pm · Osterley Park and House
DOT Productions bring a 60-minute outdoor retelling of Baum's Wizard of Oz to the lawn at Osterley. Fast-paced, silly and full of songs, and suitable for all ages.
Gates open at 1pm for a 2pm start. Bring a blanket or a low-backed chair, and a picnic if you like, though only assistance dogs are allowed at this one. The performance space is on a lawn 200 yards from the garden entrance, and house admission is sold separately.
Tickets £14.50, or £53 for a family of four. Booking essential.

🚲 Dr Bike at Chiswick Town Hall
Saturday 8 August, 10am to 12pm · Heathfield Terrace, W4 4JN
Free bike checks and repairs, second Saturday of every month. Cycle Instructor mechanics will look over wheels, brakes, gears, racks, pedals and saddles, and fix any minor adjustments on the spot. Anything bigger and they'll tell you what needs doing.
No booking. Turn up in good time and queue.
🪑 Antique and Vintage Market on the High Road
Sunday 9 August, 9am to 3pm · Chiswick High Road
The monthly outdoor antique and vintage market returns. Worth an early start if you want the good stuff before it walks off down the High Road.
It's outdoors, so the organisers ask you to check their site before setting out if the weather looks iffy. Not a problem this weekend.
💃 Flamenco Night at the George IV
Sunday 9 August, 7.30pm to 10pm · 185 Chiswick High Road, W4 2DR
Anita la Maltesa brings Fiesta Flamenca back to the George IV, with guest dancer Pablo Egea, guitarist Ramon Ruiz, singer Carlos Lobo and Sebastian Ruiz on percussion. Traditional Spanish flamenco in a room small enough that you feel it.
🎬 Outdoor cinema at Gunnersbury Park
Friday 7 to Sunday 9 August, 7pm · Gunnersbury Park Museum Gardens
Picturehouse's run in the Museum Gardens ends this weekend. 10 Things I Hate About You on Friday, Jurassic Park on Saturday and Grease on Sunday.
Films start at dusk rather than the door time. Bring a blanket or a low chair. Every ticket includes £7 towards food and drink, and well-behaved dogs on leads are welcome.

🐾 Chiswick House Dog Show: registrations still open
Sunday 20 September, 11am to 4.15pm · Cricket Pitch, Chiswick House & Gardens, Staveley Road entrance
Flagged last week, worth repeating: 17 classes across the day, from Waggiest Tail and Best Rescue to Golden Oldie and Naughtiest Dog. Fancy dress theme this year is The Traitors.
Classes are £6 per dog and several sell out early. Spectators free, proceeds to Chiswick House & Gardens Trust.

Tickets are still on sale for the festival’s 18th year, including a panel marking 60 years since The Beatles filmed at Chiswick House, and appearances from Nick Clegg, Kate Mosse, Mary Portas and Dame Jacqueline Wilson.

Salsa and bachata on Mondays with three levels of classes, quiz night the same evening, Dungeons and Dragons on Tuesdays, open mic on Wednesdays and Hartbeeps for the little ones on Friday mornings. Sunday brings supervised arts and crafts so parents can get through a roast in peace.
Their feed is where the one-offs land first, which is how most people find out about things like this Sunday's flamenco night before they sell out.

🍕 New York slices land on Devonshire Road
Doctor Dough Pizza has opened its first permanent restaurant on Devonshire Road after a three-year search for a site. Collection started yesterday, with dine-in from September.
Founder Sonay Ali built the business up from a stall in Hammersmith's Lyric Square through pop-ups and residencies. He lives with Crohn's disease, and developed a fermented dough that is lighter and easier to digest without losing the texture of a proper New York slice.
Expect the New York margherita, pepperoni, white pizzas and a tomato pie, with specials including a vodka pie and a New Haven. It's the old glass shop on the corner of Devonshire Road and Glebe Street.

📮 A permanent home, finally, for Chiswick Post Office
The Post Office has agreed to move Chiswick Post Office into Robert Dyas at 326 Chiswick High Road, ending more than a year of temporary arrangements at Heathfield Terrace.
The new branch will have three open plan serving positions and open Monday to Saturday, 9am to 6pm. That's six hours a week more than now, including Saturday afternoons and later closing. Refurbishment is underway and moving dates will follow.
Worth knowing before you make the trip: the new space is smaller, and Evri parcel drop-off, passport application checks, document certification and DVLA photocard renewals are all going.

🌱 Three Chiswick pocket parks win biodiversity awards
Abundance London entered three of its gardens into this year's Ealing Biodiversity Awards for Gardens and Green Spaces. All three won.
Plane Tree Garden on Acton Lane was a fly-tipped wasteland until 2024, when local teenager Barney Kynoch started clearing it for his Duke of Edinburgh Award with his parents and a neighbour helping. It's now a shaded island of biodiversity, and he has something for the mantlepiece. Meon Garden and Beaconsfield Gardens were also recognised.
The group now looks after nearly 40 pocket parks across Hounslow and Ealing, most of them here. All volunteer-run, all on corners most of us walk past without thinking.
